John Martin Charity Challenge 2006 - Macmillan News

For the past 3 years John Martin and a group of his friends have been organising a Golf Tournament.  To date John has raised a staggering £18,500 but this year, John wants to smash all records and raise £20,000. This is a huge challenge for everyone involved in the Golf Day but behind all the excitement of organising another successful event there is a greater motivation. In 2002 Linda Martin John's wife, died of cancer at the Macmillan Palliative Care Unit.

As a thank you to all the people who had helped not only his wife but the whole family, John decided he would try and raise some money. This initially started as a couple of events at the local pub, the Railway but has now escalated to a massive event each year with upwards of 100 golfers and raising a fantastic £13000 last year.

John said "It is such a difficult time in anyone life when a loved one has cancer but the support that we received from Macmillan was outstanding.  The doctors and nurses really helped us cope with what was happening to Linda and explained everything so we could understand. The Golf Day is our way of saying thank you".

John raises cash for cancer care - an article from Sheffield Star

When keen amateur golfer John Martin's wife Linda died through cancer he was stricken with grief but also full of admiration for the way the Macmillan nurses had cared for her.
He felt he had to repay them in some way and friends suggested he should use his golfing connections to organise a fundraising tournament.
The couple were well known from their days running a couple of city pubs, the Old Bowling Green and the Rising Sun at Jenkin Road. The first golfing day he organised last year raised £3,900 and this year John hopes to do even better.
"It's going to be held at Styrrup Hall Golf and Country Club, near Blyth on Friday May 27 and I'm hoping for over £5,000" he tells the Diary.
Entry for the contest on the par 72 championship course is £45 and that includes a two course evening meal and entertainment.
